Send the “One Big Beautiful Bill” into Reverse to Move Climate Protections Forward

Every day, billions of people around the world pray, attend religious services, or engage in spiritual activities. People of faith thus have enormous social and political influence when we join forces around our shared values. Along with 20 national religious organizations (including Jewish Earth Alliance, which is represented on the Steering Committee) with a total of 4 million+ members, GreenFaith has launched the Covenant For Our Future campaign, bringing together US religious and spiritual communities to exercise that power. Through the campaign, faith leaders and people of diverse religions are calling on Congress to repeal HR1, misleadingly known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” Signed into law in 2025, this bill decimated the Inflation Reduction Act and federal support for renewable energy.

Together on Tuesday, August 18, we will hear from Rev. Fletcher Harper, executive director of GreenFaith, who will detail the climate and environmental harms of HR1. We will then call our senators and ask them to begin a process to repeal the law once the new Congress is elected next November and takes its seats in January.

As the harms of HR1 have become evident, several members of Congress have begun to discuss its repeal. Our voices can make a key difference.

Background

HR1, sometimes referred to as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” was passed by the Senate in July 2025. Among its many devastating provisions, the law eliminates support for clean energy projects, increases subsidies for gas, oil, and coal development, and provides for drilling and fracking on public lands.

Covenant For the Future is a multifaith campaign to marshal the power of faith communities in support of repealing HR1 and demanding that a new Congress gets us back on track to stop developing of fossil fuel energy sources, protect vulnerable communities from the devastations of climate change, and accelerate the clean energy transition.

Why Now

It is vital to start now to get members of Congress who support our environmental agenda to put our climate goals as top legislative priorities so that we can hit the ground running once a new Congress is in place. Our phone calls to senators on August 18 will play an important role ensuring that the Jewish community is a major faith-based group in influencing Congress to do the right thing and repeal HR1.

Jewish Perspective

A Midrash in the Talmud (BT Nedarim 38a) expands on God's command to Moses: “Carve for yourself two tablets like the first…” (Exodus 34:1). The rabbis imagine that the second set of tablets were carved from a sapphire quarry found beneath Moses’ tent, and that God tells Moses to keep for himself the precious shards left over from the carving. Moses becomes wealthy, not to elevate his status, but to place him beyond the reach of corruption. In Pirkei Avot (4:1), Ben Zoma asks, Who is rich? One who is satisfied with what they have. Jewish tradition measures wealth not by accumulation, but by freedom from greed.

When those entrusted with power divert resources meant for the “orphan, the widow, and the stranger,” they violate one of the Torah's deepest expectations of leadership. The result is not only injustice for the vulnerable; it is a moral inversion in which both society and Creation are turned upside down.

Jewish Earth Alliance Senate Call Script

Hello. My name is [Name], and I'm a constituent from [City, State] and a member of Jewish Earth Alliance.

I'm calling to urge Senator [Name] to publicly support the complete repeal of HR1 and the full restoration of the Inflation Reduction Act and all previous federal climate protections.

As a Jew, I believe we have a sacred responsibility to protect Creation and safeguard the health and future of our communities. HR1 rolled back clean energy investments, weakened climate protections, expanded fossil fuel subsidies, and harmed vulnerable families. We need Congress to chart a different course.

Please ask the senator to speak out now in favor of repealing HR1 and restoring strong federal climate protections. As momentum grows for the next Congress, we're asking senators to begin publicly supporting full repeal now so restoring climate protections and clean energy becomes an early legislative priority. Public leadership today helps build the support needed for action in 2027.
